  1. He received his B.Sc in Chemistry from the University of Campinas (2008). His M.Sc. in Biochemistry was received from the University of São Paulo (2011) and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry was also received from the University of São Paulo (2015).

Biography:

Research Interests

José’s interest in lipids started during a course of drug delivery systems he took while in his undergraduate studies, where he was fascinated to learn about the self-assembly of amphipathic molecules (e.g., lipids) in macromolecular aggregates of different sizes and shapes. Parallel to that, the accomplishments of his undergraduate research in the study of planar waveguides for technological applications triggered his desired to pursue a scientific career path. His vision to contribute to the treatment of human diseases led him to choose his graduate studies in biochemistry, with lipids being the subject of interest. The interest in lipids and membranes brought him to the laboratory of Dr. Richard M. Epand (McMaster University) for a year during his Ph.D., in an exchange program. The exciting findings obtained during that occasion motivated his coming back to Dr. Epand’s lab for postdoctoral studies, which allowed him to obtain broad experience in various fundamental aspects of the relationship between membrane lipids and their biological function in different physiological conditions as well as their dysregulation in pathological conditions. José joined the Britz-McKibbin group to leverage his expertise in the fundamentals of lipids to tackle LC-MS based lipidomic projects in large-scale epidemiological studies.
